Kindergarten teacher Susan Venn has always held a strong conviction that the Arts are pivotal in early childhood education.
She was inspired by the work of American Educator Aline Wolf, who used art postcards as 'child sized masterpieces'.
Susan wrote the story of Roy & Matilda, The Gallery Mice as a means of introducing children at her Melbourne kindergarten to some of her favourite Australian paintings in the National Gallery of Victoria.
Visits to see the actual artworks in the Gallery followed and from this developed an Art Appreciation program for the very young built around the story.
Delighted at the children's amazing responses she went on to recount further adventures of Roy & Matilda set in the Art Galleries of New South Wales and Queensland.
Susan and her husband now live in Tasmania.
